Search with Yahoo instead of Google? October 21, 2005 1:00 PM Subscribe
It has been demonstrated many times that when searching MeFi, Yahoo does a better job than Google-- maybe the search box on the homepage should use Yahoo?

Yeah, I'll do this.
I'm also going to just have one giant search box on the various search pages, with options to search via yahoo (default), google, or the craptacular mefi search engine.

I really don't want to suggest any sort of post-poniment, but as a back-burner issue have you considered (outsourcing, perhaps) a rewrite of the internal search engine?

Yeah, I don't mind outsourcing. Who wants to write a search engine?

Fine. But I refuse to start using the term "Yahoo-fu." I won't do it.

mathowie: I'm working on a search engine server thingy that might come in handy for Metafilter. Directly, it's for Scoop, but when it's done it should be generic enough that it would probably work for Metafilter. Email me if you want details.

I've had better luck with Clusty, which is apparently a search engine aggregator. Warning: at least one of the SOs it aggregates, Wisenut, may be evil. It has been reported to ignore robots.txt.
Clusty has found stuff on MeFi that I knew was there, but that Google couldn't find. It has also found stuff elsewhere that Google misses. It's where I go next if a Google search fails.

Ya-fu works for me. And thanks, Matt, for making Yahoo the default. It makes much more sense.
