"sort by my comments" October 20, 2005 11:55 PM Subscribe
A "sort by my comments" thingy on Ask Metafilter would make it easier to monitor threads that one is interested in. There is the potential for abuse, but since the time-limit on questions there has recently been extended, I don't think it would be all that dangerous.
This covers Ask MetaFilter posts you've posted in, and yeah I need to finish it up.
Also, don't post a dot in threads you like -- I'm working on a favorites system much like the My Comments page I just linked, which will track threads you didn't have to participate in, but want to watch.

On rereading my last sentence, I think was unclear. I don't mean to imply that it would be good to watch threads that have more comments than others.
I'm actually saying that since there's a fear of threads becoming cult threads, it's weird that there's a "watch threads with the most comments" option on the "front page", and yet one's options for paying attention to threads on AskMe is limited to scrolling down several days in the past, or looking up one's own user page and selecting comments.

Matt, I was never planning on posting dots, and I remember that thread.
I only post in AskMe threads when I have something that I think is useful to contribute. I just want to see if things get resolved or not, which is the purpose of AskMe.
Why not have the same system in AskMe that you have on the "front page"? I already have four metafilters bookmarked: Metafilter proper, Metatalk, Ask Metafilter, and that "detect deleted threads" thingy. Why not just have the same interface on all of them, considering that on MetaTalk and Ask Metafilter, things expire more quickly?

I've been a bad boy recently and commented in AskMe threads without much of substance to add, just because I really really wanted to be able to find the thread later, so this makes me quiver with anticipation. (Yeah, I know, use de.licio.us for now, but I just can't seem to reach critical use mass with that, great as it is)
Also, thanks Matt for the pretty pony (linked off the header at AskMe) I requested. That's my first! I hope, as you mentioned in the feature request thread, that you'll bulk it up with some enhanced displayey functionality soon, and that people find it a useful thing once it assumes its final form.

But if I don't post a dot, how will people know that I'm sorry for the death of their question?

odinsdream, the fear I've read here before is that if posts to metatalk and ask metafilter don't scroll off the page fast enough, they'll stay "alive" too long and become cult threads.

Fear of a cult-thread planet.

You are not logged in, either login or create an account to post comments
On the "front page", there is a thing on the upper right that sorts posts by the most comments; why would this be a bad thing for AskMe?
