Words that are not okay for minorities.
I object to the multiple uses of 'whackadoodle' to describe the mental illness of a young man (who yes, killed half a dozen people) in this thread. [more inside]

I originally thought this was a site about Meat.
I don't care about your misreadings. [more inside]

That's really small of you!
I was recently called out by another user for the style I use when quoting others. The criticism was that, by wrapping the other person's comments in <small> tags, I was engaging in a deliberate effort to diminish the importance of what they said. Is this a legitimate criticism? [more inside]

Spoilers should not be deletable
In this thread, there's a note about spoilery comments being deleted. I don't think that's a good policy to hold here; the comments were (presumably) not harmful to members, and should not have been axed. [more inside]

Sorry
I received a very thoughtful mail today from goodnewsfortheinsane calling me out for "snark inflation" and asking me to "tone it down a bit." The mod is right to call me out - I have been indeed been in a snarky mood - and I want to say sorry. [more inside]

Comments
I think it is detrimental to discussion on MetaFilter for people to bring trolling or offensive or just stupid comments from other sites into this one, so that people here can be duly outraged that somebody is wrong on the internet. [more inside]

snarky agenda driven derails on askme
I've noticed this trend for a long time in the human relations section. Somebody will post a question in good faith and because something in their framing of the question rubs a particular member the wrong way said member feels entitled to toss back a glib, derailing and lecturing remark. Front-page porn
I thought this post was more than a little R/X-rated for its front-page content. While it was a funny link, I wouldn't have wanted that on my screen if, say, a student wandered into my office (and I'm at university). I wouldn't have minded a NSFW on the front page, with the content below the fold/link, but - sex, naked, sex, plow into, orgasm, and orgasm on the front page? Or am I a prude, in my dotage, who shouldn't have Metafilter open at work?

(mis)handling non-US content
Between the comments on this post about a story written by a Singaporean writer and the framing of this post about Storypick, I feel like Metafilter does not do non-American content well. [more inside]

Using askme as therapy?
I don't want to call anyone out specifically, because I don't want to bring extra negative attention to people that are clearly having a hard time, but I think anyone that reads askme regularly will notice certain repeat askers, who always ask variations on 'I am depressed, and my life is terrible, tell me how to be okay with that." And basically never take any advice from anyone. Is there a point where the mods will tell them that it's not a great use of askme? Or should they? Is everyone okay with using askme as a therapist when they clearly need to be in actual therapy?
