MetaMetaTalk and MetaModeration Thereof

In another MeTa post, a moderator made comments that some found to be unmodly. That other MeTa became a more wide-ranging discussion of moderation (and metamoderation), to the point that it has been agreed that a different MetaTalk post should be started. This is that MetaTalk post. [more inside]

Murrrrrrder?

Earlier today after a passing a family while walking down the street I said to my wife, "The interesting question to me isn't why some people murder their children. It's why anyone doesn't murder their children" - I didn’t think comments about murdering any types of people were allowed, but this one still stands. [more inside]

Dammit Louis! You eff up everything you touch.

We’ve seen 2 FPPs on the revealed Louis CK performance killed today, which, ok, understandable. The guy has morphed into an absolutely indefensible monster. Still, the discussions here have lead some of us to have over 20 years of on & off participation with MetaFilter. I was excited to see the diverse minds of this community approach his attempted return. While Taz’ reasoning of not wanting to give this shithead a platform for his loathsome hate speech isn’t objectionable per se, this community is mature enough to discuss this and the articles cited in the 2 FPPs are interesting enough to spark informed discussion. Sadly it’s probably too late to try posting this again if the mods decide it’s alright to make a 3rd attempt. I’d like to believe we, the peeps of MF, could have handled it with another incisive and educational public conversation.

Deerhoof

AFIK, this band has never had a FPP. And at the same time pretty much everyone here (ok, maybe 10%) would love the hell out of them. And yet there is no recent "news" to hook an FPP on. So, as someone who has suddenly found this question, um, urgent... How do I make this (first! FPP worthy? Or is that not a thing? [more inside]

Should MeFi have the capacity for geoblocking content?

Though I know we typically rail against its use in the overwhelming majority of cases, I only ask because this post being viewable from a location where the news it involves is subject to a suppression order is... troubling.

Fanfare and a Tone (?) question.

I don't mean this to be Tone policing, but there are two Book posts on Fanfare about Jodie Picoult and the framing of the posts feels .. off? [more inside]

What are comment threads for?

What's the point of linking comment threads to a specific fpp? Is it so that we specifically discuss the links in the post? Or is it to have an open thread on the sort of general topic of the post, links be damned? Do you flag comments that don't seem to be engaging with the links in a post? Do you flag comments that comment on other comments that don't seem to be engaging with the links in a post? Both? Neither? If someone interprets a comment of yours as an uninformed spit take, how would you want your comment dealt with? By flagging? Addressed in the comment thread? If the latter, how? [more inside]

A question about mod praxis and the authorial voice of users

In this recent MetaTalk thread about an ableist slur from five days ago cortex noted that after mod discussion the ask metafilter question that provoked the thread was unilaterally edited to remove some indeed very questionable word choice, while allowing the otherwise fine question that various members had invested time into answering to remain. While I think that the previous MeTa thread functioned as an excellent forum for discussing our values with regards to abelist language, this specific solution struck me as a pretty radical departure from the core philosophy of MetaFilter with regards to both user identity and authorship as well as the public expectations laid out in the FAQ in a way that I think warrants independent discussion. My grandmother is smarter than you

How would you explain it to your grandmother? is such a terrible question to ask regarding tech. I work daily in my office with actual, real-live grandmothers who actively develop software with IBM and RedHat. Please kill this ageist and sexist assumption. It is actively harmful and factually incorrect.

Possible alternates could be: layman's terms, plain English, simplify it for me... [more inside]
