Would MetaFilter be a better place without relentless negativity?
I'm increasingly concerned about the effects of insistently negative comments on MetaFilter. [more inside]

Double-post etiquette?
I'm kind of confused as to why this post is still up. It's been flagged as a double since about half an hour after it first went up - yesterday's post is a link to the official TED Talk YouTube channel version of a talk that was posted to the blue, linked to the ted.com version, when it was first published in 2012. Is there a "we haven't seen this in a while, so it's OK" rule about double posts that I missed somewhere?

Post tags and deadnames
I posted Daniel Mallory Ortberg’s latest instalment of his ongoing serial fic. When tagging the post, I was conflicted about tagging it with his deadname (which is “Mallory Ortberg”. Two questions:
1) on a technical level, will tagging with his full name link up with older posts tagged with his deadname, since the latter is included in the former? He’s the same author, and that continuity of work seems valuable.
2) on a trans-etiquette level, is this shitty and equivalent to deadnaming? (I’m more interested in hearing what trans folks have to say on this one.)
I ended up tagging the post with his name and his deadname but I’m questioning that.

Fanfare critical standards
The discussion of Joker on Fanfare includes a lot of comments that are flat-out negative. How much of that is allowed on fanfare? Has policy shifted to allow more of it? [more inside]

How do you know what is worth a question on AskMetaFilter?
So I’ve posted a few things lately only to discover that the bulk of the answers do not meet my needs and I start to wonder if it was worth using up one of my limited questions on that topic, or whether I should just be expressing myself differently for better results. To me AskMetaFilter is a good way of thinking through a difficult issue or helping me to feel better when I’m feeling bad. [more inside]

We should stop linking to the NY Times
The history of the NY Times paywall has been one of cat and mouse games, but at present the site is so aggressively paywalled as to be functionally unreachable for many. Continuing to link to it as a primary source in a post seems contrary to community standards. [more inside]

AskMess
Today I posted an AskMe question. So far, half of the suggestions have been deleted as noise. The mods probably did the best job they could of cleaning this mess up, but I wonder if this could be a good opportunity to reflect as a community on how we might be able to lower the frequency of answers that did not meet the criteria laid out in the question.

Allow "push back" comments to stand
In light of the deletion of a Metafilter comment that pushed back against a racist comment in the Frank Ocean thread, I am requesting that the community discuss the benefits of allowing "push back" comments to stand - especially when those comments are insightful, enlightening and challenge other Mefites to be better members of the community.
