Askme caching and the delay in new posts appearing June 6, 2005 7:25 AM Subscribe
I posted a new question to AskMeFi this morning, and after hitting submit, I was taken directly back to the main page, where my question wasn't listed. I tried going back in to post, but it said I'd already asked my question for the week. To be sure, I logged out and back in, and my question still didn't show up, and I couldn't re-ask it. What happened?
Why yes!
It looks like it's showing up now. Didn't there used to be some sort of "Thanks for posting!" confirmation page after submitting?
Anyway, thanks - should have just waited it out a bit longer.

There's code to cache all front page queries now, but it should update when a new post goes up. I'll double-check it and fix.

Same thing happened to me (yoga and tai chi), FWIW. It didn't show up right away, but it did show up right away in my "questions asked by this user" page.

If it helps, it seems to have shown up about 7-8 minutes after I posted it.

From a closed thread, regarding Plutor, who's posted in this one (I mean, is it really a derail given that this thread here is more or less over?):
And Plutor, according to your user page, you are on the wrong side.

When posting a question to AskMefi or a thread on MetaTalk, the preview button says "Preview the Link." Should it say "Preview the question" or "Preview the post" instead? (Is no nit too small for picking?)All this effort just to reply:

The period at the end of your first sentence should be after the closing quotation mark.

Plutor: depends on which side of the Atlantic you're on, amigo.

See, I thought someone would point that out. (Damn #1 closing threads before I can get into an argument!) After I posted it, I realized it's a grey area in quote-style. I recognize that to Mericans, punctuation belongs on the inside of the quotes in dialogue. "Yeah, we know that," you say. But when you're quoting something that is not a full sentence, and more importantly when you're quoting a sign or a button or a tattoo, I feel that you should quote exactly what's there. There's no period on the button, so I think the period belongs outside the quotes.
I recognize my opinion may not be the agreed-upon standard, but that doesn't really matter to me. I was just looking for a nit that was smaller than patgas'.

This happened to my question just now. Guess I'll wait four more minutes to see what's up.

What I think to be true: periods and commas get included inside of the quotation marks even if they don't belong to the sentence quoted. Question marks and others stay outside unless they're actually part of the quote.
